Toto Wolff is in advanced talks to offload a portion of his ownership stake in the Mercedes Formula 1 team.

The deal values the Mercedes team at £4.6bn – an unprecedented figure for a Formula 1 squad – following McLaren were valued at £3.5bn in a change of ownership structure in September.

Wolff, who holds a 33% stake of Mercedes F1, would sell a stake in the region of five percent.

The 53-year-old would stay on as team boss and CEO should the deal proceed.

Shareholder Structure

The other shareholders in Mercedes F1 are Mercedes and chemicals giant Ineos, who each also own one-third of the enterprise.

An official representative said: "We are providing no comment on the matter. The governance of the team will remain unaltered, and each shareholder are fully committed to the ongoing success of the brand in F1."

Financial Growth

This arrangement would represent a substantial rise in value of the Mercedes team after Ineos Group bought its share for £208 million in 2022.

The rise demonstrates the expansion in valuations of Formula 1 outfits in the past few years due to the growing popularity of the sport around the world.

This trend was evident with the success of the F1 movie featuring Hollywood star Brad Pitt, which was released last summer and earned over $630 million (£458 million) at cinemas worldwide.

The film represents the actor's top-grossing movie and the highest-earning sports film ever released.

Present Performance

The Mercedes team are second in the team standings, behind McLaren Racing, with three races remaining this season.

Mercedes' primary racer George Russell has won 2 of the 21 grands prix this year and is in fourth place in the drivers' championship behind McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen.

The team secured a unprecedented eight straight team titles and seven driver championships, six for Lewis Hamilton and one by Nico Rosberg, between 2014 to 2021.
