The Black Phone
Scott Derrickson's contained scarefest holds up well despite the lack of a follow-up. Set in 1978 Denver, a series of kidnappings has left the children frightened. Once Finney is taken by “the Grabber” and imprisoned in a basement, he anticipates a fatal end. However, the non-functional line mounted nearby repeatedly calls, with ghostly voices providing assistance, as the intuitive nightmares of Gwen, his sister may be his salvation. A solid creepfest. The Eyes of Tammy Faye
In the struggle between faith and wealth, the victory is clear for greed in this director's brilliantly over-the-top true story of the disgraced TV preacher and her felon spouse. Garfield plays the greedy Jim, who declares early on, asserting religious justification for riches. Both individuals set about capitalizing on the American public's spiritual convictions. It's a riot of bad interior design, overdone appearance and insincerity, though Jessica Chastain succeeds to show the real-life figure with compassion. October 14th, late night, Film4
